My coaching approach

My coachees appreciate my fresh and objective perspective, and challenging questioning; always delivered with empathy, support, and a sense of humour!

I work on a trust-building basis; I believe in a reciprocally open and honest relationship, progressing steadily towards my coachees’ goals. My style is empathetic but direct; I’m not afraid to take my coachees outside their comfort zone or ‘call them out’ if I believe this will help facilitate their mobility.

I utilise the GROW coaching model; a structured programme framework used to guide focused conversations and facilitate personal and professional development. It is renowned for its simplicity and effectiveness, consisting of four key steps:

Goal: Clearly define the desired outcome or goal.
Reality: Assess the current situation, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
Options: Explore various solutions or actions to achieve the goal.
Will: Commit to an action plan and develop strategies to overcome obstacles.

By following these steps, the GROW model empowers individuals to take ownership of their development, gain valuable insights, and achieve their goals. It fosters a collaborative coaching relationship where the individual is the driver of their own growth.

My approach is strengths-based; I help coachees recognise and leverage their strengths to find solutions, rather than dwell on their problems. That said, focussing on strengths doesn’t mean ignoring areas for improvement; far from it!

Strengths-based coaching works well for those who have an open mindset, want to become more self-aware, and are ready to do more of what works (and less of what doesn’t). It works less well for those who are backwards-looking, seeking specific advice or solutions, or who are happy to stay inside their comfort zone.

With a business background in the media, publishing, PR, distribution, and agency sectors, I have a nuanced understanding of the dynamics – and sometimes tension – between the creative and the commercial. I’m interested in transition, innovation and technology, and I love working with start-ups and new business models.

I abide by the Global Code of Ethics for Coaches, Mentors, and Supervisors and I receive regular coaching supervision. To learn more about the importance for executive coaches of supervision, adherence to a code of practice, and client contracting, spare a few minutes to read my blog.
